Groundlings Ski Haus

This was the last poster I did before I left The Groundlings in the fall of 2019. Normally, around Christmastime, The Groundlings puts on their Holiday Show and it runs for all of December. This time, they wanted to rename the show and redesign the poster. The new name of the show was Groundlings Ski Haus, which gave me a good starting point: a ski haus. I took inspiration from an actual German ski haus (I was originally going to say “…from actual German ski hauses,” but I don’t think “hauses” is a word. I even Googled it). Now, I knew I wanted to put an actual ski haus in it, but I didn’t know exactly how to convey that this poster was for a comedy sketch show and not for a travel poster. So, once I finished the haus (please don’t take a shot every time you read the word “haus”) and the snow blanketing it, I added a few fun touches to the surrounding area: a snowman wearing a Hawaiian shirt and a Tyrolean, a bunny frolicking in the snow, Christmas lights, and a neon sign on the front that says, “Das Groundlings” (an homage to the sign on the actual theatre). Even though I worked for hours on the composition, line work, and coloring of the poster, my favorite part is probably the sky, otherwise known as the easiest part of the entire poster. What can I say? I’m a sucker for a nice deep blue.
